For 35 years, Hubbs went to bed before me and woke up before me. We settled into a morning routine where he would rise at 5:30-6:00, shower, have breakfast, enjoying his alone time in the morning while I left him to it. On the way out, he would kiss me, acting as my alarm clock. Actually, my snooze button! I would then lie-in for a few minutes till I was cognizant enough to wake the children.
Maybe in his youth he was a night owl; in fact, I’m pretty sure he was! But when he married me, he had a job where he had to work respectable hours. Over the years, we added children, so he became responsible for art camps, ballet lessons, and preschools. His financial responsibilities spurred him on! (Prov. 16:26)
I realized the other morning I was lying-in because he was still in bed. Since he’s been home on disability, his sleeping patterns have been horrible. (Just this morning, he didn’t come to bed till 5 am, having been awake all night.) He stays up late, if he can’t sleep, and never gets up before me. I’m the early bird now, which is ironic.
I love discovering these little truths in my life. Ever since I realized what I was doing – lying in till he left the bed, which he doesn’t do anymore – I have been getting up earlier. Our routines of life have changed, but it is still a treasure to share my mornings with him.
