The Story that Started it All
Many years ago, our fourth-grade teacher set aside some time every afternoon to take us to a faraway place called The Little House in the Big Woods. Having heard stories from my grandmother and great-grandmother, Laura Ingalls Wilder’s stories had a familiar ring to them. They were homey, comforting, and fun. I decided after one of those afternoon sessions that I was going to be a writer.
I didn’t start right away. I was a young, unsophisticated girl of nine or ten years old. In school, I would write my assignments with glee, though. As I got older, I wrote letters, telling stories along the way. In high school and college, I would write my thoughts and stories in a diary, of sorts. I had encouragement from many teachers along the way.
Finding Myself In My Twenties
Out of college, I married, starting a family. Life became busy, and I worried that my letter and diary writing just wasn’t enough to pursue this long-held dream. In those days, there was no internet; information was learned by way of libraries, newspapers, and magazines. I did a lot of reading, and learning a lot. I found my favorite books were the memoirs. I learned that Laura Ingalls Wilder didn’t even begin her first novel until she was in her sixties and that she had written magazine articles for years.
With that knowledge, I stopped obsessing about writing the great American novel and began living. I figured LIW had lived a full and varied life before she began writing in earnest, and that is what I intended to do, as well. Hubbs (my husband) gave me an interesting life, with five children and all their varied activities. We moved all over the United States and lived in Romania for a few months as missionaries.
For several years, I wrote newsletters for our missionary endeavors. Internet and email had finally become ubiquitous; I enjoyed regaling people with our everyday lives — instantly! Instant feedback for my stories and pictures.
Old Enough to Find Treasures
Four years ago, I decided I was old enough to really start writing in earnest. I didn’t know what to pursue as far as things of interest, except that I am a positive person. I wanted to write uplifting, homey, and fun stories that inspired me as a ten-year-old. What began as an exercise in writing became My Daily Treasures.
Nearly every day, I write about myriad subjects, usually things of interest to me. What I find is that the little simple things of life that interest me tend to interest others as well — finding the little treasures in life that can bring smiles to one’s days. I hope you enjoy my little trivial outlooks of life and that they encourage you to enjoy your life and living.
